Saint Florian
Saint Florian is honored today in Poland, and Upper Austria, as a soldier who died for the faith in 304. He was a Roman officer, stationed in what is now part of Austria, and a Christian although he was not known as such. He suffered the fate of other Christian soldiers, martyrdom at the hands of pagans, after he went to console the Christians who were imprisoned after the persecution of Diocletian. His punishment was swift and cruel; he was scourged, flayed alive, and thrown into the river Enns with a millstone tied to his neck. Devotion to him became widespread, and Pope Lucius III sent some of his relics to Poland in 1138.
