Bl. Theresa of Jesus Gerhardinger 1797-1879

Blessed Theresa of Jesus Gerhardinger was born the year 1797 near Regensberg, Germany and was baptized with the name Caroline. Caroline was a child in a working class family and at the age of six, was sent to the Canonesses of St. Augustine to receive an education. Caroline was living at the school when it, and many other religious communities, were forced to close in 1809 by decree of the Bavarian government. After being forced out of the convent, Caroline began to receive an education and direction from her bishop. Eventually, Caroline decided to begin a new religious order devoted to God and Christian education. In 1828, the Vatican managed to get concessions from the Bavarian government and many religious communities were allowed to reopen. Caroline and the other sisters moved into a refurbished convent and started the order that was to become the School Sisters of Notre Dame. Caroline took the name Teresa in religious life but soon became called Teresa of Jesus because of her devotion to the True Presence of Christ in the Blessed Sacrament. The sister’s Rule was approved by the Vatican in 1854 and the order began to quickly spread throughout the world. Teresa spent the rest of her life devoted to the work of the order and died in 1879. Blessed Teresa of Jesus was beatified in 1985 by Pope John Paul II.
