Saint Philip

From the Gospel of St. John, comes what little we know about St. Philip. He came from the town of Bethsaida, as did Andrew and Peter, and he was called to follow Christ after Andrew, Peter and John.

John tells us that before Christ performed the miracle of the loaves and fishes, he asked Philip where bread could be bought to feed the crowd; Philip answered that it would be very expensive to feed so many people, not knowing that an expression of faith was the answer Christ was expecting. At the last supper, Philip cried, "Lord, show us the Father," to which Jesus replied, "Have I been wo lona a time with you, and you have not known me? Philip, he who sees me sees the Father."

Philip died and was buried in Hierapolis, which was located in what is now Turkey. His relics are said to have been brought to Rome and are preserved in the Basilica of the Apostles. James the Lesser, known as such because he was younger that John's brother James, is called a "brother of the Lord" as his mother was closely related to the Blessed Virgin. St. Paul describes James as a "pillar" of the Church. He was one of the most respected members of the Church, and was called "the just" by the Jews.

Eventually, the Jews became alarmed about the numbers of converts and they tried to force him to publicly repudiate Christ. James the Lesser, took that opportunity to give testimony to Christ and was dragged out of the Temple and was stoned and clubbed to death.

James wrote one of the "Catholic Epistles", and is is believed that some of his relics are preserved in the Basilica of the Apostles. His head is venerated at the cathedral of Ancona.
