Virtual Novena to Saint Clare of Assisi

Saint Francis in contemplation
"He loved me and delivered Himself for me." (Gal 2:20)

Saint Francis is often pictured with birds and flowers and maybe a wolf at his feet but though this was indeed a part of Francis his sanctity came first from his deep love and reverence for the crucified Christ.

"Let all of us brothers, consider the Good Shepherd Who bore the sufferings of the cross to save His sheep.

The Lord's sheep followed Him in tribulation and persecution, in shame and hunger, in weakness and temptation, and in other ways; and for these things they received eternal life from the Lord."
Writings of Saint Francis [VI: Imitation of Christ]

Saint Francis counseled his brothers to follow Christ unreservedly. To accept all that came to them - and to rejoice with perfect joy in whatever way the cross might be manifested to them at each moment.

Let us too, with that same courage and devotion of Saint Francis take these next five weeks to be open to the crosses that God will give to us. Let us accept them with praise, let us delight in the joy of knowing that God is calling us into deeper holiness, greater love and great joy through them.
