Quote for the Day:
I will abandon myself fully to the Holy Spirit,
allowing myself to be led wherever and whenever the Spirit wants,
accompanying the Spirit, for my part,
with effective and strong resolutions and serious discernment.
The Holy Spirit descends upon us with great gentleness,
never with a racket.

St. Frances Xavier Cabrini

Quote from the book, "101 Inspirational Stories of the Power of Prayer"

Over the weekend the Steubenville Youth Conference Northwest was held at Gonzaga University in Spokane. We had a booth and attended it for about seven hours on Saturday. It was an awesome event for the kids and everyone else who attended. They were expecting 1000 kids and 1200 came.

It was so exciting to see kids excited about being catholic. It was uplifting for us. When we went on Friday night to set up our table - the kids were already jazzed up and excited. When they saw me and Sr. Colleen, it was like, "Oh wow! Sisters! Sisters in habits!"

This is a picture of one of the Sisters of Mary with two young people. They had the booth across from us. See pictures here

We did not attend any of the events or things like that but the contagious excitement and fervor of these kids was so over the top!

Two of our friends who are Secular Franciscans had a booth next to us. Notice the yellow on fire bands around their arms? Those were really simple yellow arm bands that they were wearing to designate they would pray over any young person who wanted it. The way it came out in this picture is kind of like it was more than just them who would be praying!

This afternoon they picked up everything from our table after the closing and brought it to the monastery. Afterwards they shared with us the closing ceremony. Sounded so wonderful. I wish we had been there!

At one point the priest gave a sort of "Vocation Call" for any of the young men attending who might be discerning a priestly vocation. Everyone was so amazed when almost 200 young high school students went up for prayer! After that they did it for the religious young women and even more of them came up for prayer. Whoa! Who knows what the Holy Spirit has in mind for the years to come?

I truly do believe that soon the Catholic Church is going to experience a beautiful new spring of new growth and committment in the Church. Pope John Paul II was the herald of it and Pope Benedict is keeping the banner waving. Yeah!

Novena Prayer to Saint Clare

Faithful Saint Clare,
daughter of the Church,
friend and confidante of Popes,
intercede for holy Church.
Look graciously from heaven
on our holy father Pope Benedict.
Enlighten us to remove from our souls
all that hinders the progress
of the Church on earth.
Grant that we may share
your great love for the Church
of God and spread His kingdom
on earth by a holy life.
You who worked miracles
in the presence of the Popes
on earth, obtain for us the graces we need,
now that you stand in the presence
of the most high God in heaven.
Amen.

More things
are wrought by Prayer
than this world dreams of—

ALFRED LORD TENNYSON

Ten Minute Meditation
Sister Patricia Proctor, OSC
Spokane, Washington

Today the garden looks as if it needs a little work.
Some of the flowers are starting to droop.
They must need a drink and maybe even a bit of fertilizer.

You notice that Jesus is over there looking at a little green bush that appears to be wilting.
How can you give a cup of cold water to that little bush?
How can you give a moment of help and friendship to someone in your life today?
Ask Jesus, “Who needs my help today?”

Prayer when time is completed:
Jesus,
help me to help someone
who is in need today.
Perhaps write a letter or
give a smile, a hug,
or a chocolate chip cookie.
Amen.

On to Glory

Psalm 34:23
But the Lord redeems the lives of his servants;
no one incurs guilt who takes refuge in him.

In his great compassion the Father gave us his Son to redeem us. In turn, Jesus' love is so immense that he willingly laid down his life for us.

Salvation is God's gift to us. We cannot merit it. We cannot earn it. It is not a reward but a gift. We need to be open and receptive to this unique gift.

St. Paul expresses this truth in these words:

God is rich in mercy;
because of his great love for us
he brought us to life with Christ
when we were dead in sin.
By this favor you were saved."
(Eph 2:4-5)

From today's readings: "The prophet who prophesies peace is recognized as truly sent by the LORD only when his prophetic prediction is fulfilled.... Lord, teach me Your statutes.... During the fourth watch of the night, He came toward them, walking on the sea....."

Good News from False Prophets

We're all aware the word "Gospel" means "Good News" and the salvation which Christ brings is certainly the best news of history! Nonetheless, it would be precariously superficial to assume that any tiding or promise of good news inevitably corresponds to the Gospel, while anything appearing as bad news is automatically antithetical to the Gospel.

We've seen ample evidence that Jeremiah's prophecy was primarily bad news, as he staunchly proclaimed that the people's persistence in their pernicious state of sin would lead to their doom! Like the doctor who diagnoses a terminal disease, Jeremiah had to present his message to people who were understandably desperate to find a second opinion which would refute the prophet's dire determinations. So, when Hananiah showed up with his good news of forthcoming peace and prosperity, he was hailed as the type of "feel good" prophet that the people were looking for!

But the problem, of course, was that Jeremiah's words were true because they came from God, whereas Hananiah's claims were false, the result of mere wishful thinking (which even Jeremiah was tempted to indulge in when he initially conceded that he hoped with all his heart that Hananiah's prophecy would come to pass). However, regardless of the prophecy's intrinsic appeal, Jeremiah points out that "the prophet who prophesies peace is recognized as truly sent by the LORD only when his prophetic prediction is fulfilled."

There are many false prophets in our day who have enticed multitudes with promises of paradise and the dreamlike peace and prosperity that they hold will follow from Communism, sexual revolution, atheistic humanism, non-ethical medical research, Dewey's "values clarification," War in Iraq, or whatever. As Christians, it's not that we wouldn't welcome some (but not all!) of the wonderful things promised by the prophets speaking for these causes - it's just that we realistically remember that "the prophet who prophesies peace is recognized as truly sent by the LORD only when his prophetic prediction is fulfilled."
