Quote for the Day:
Hold on to the staff of prayer
and you will not fall.
And even a fall will not be fatal,
since prayer is a devout,
persistent coercing of God.
St. John Climacus

Quote from the book, "101 Inspirational Stories of the Power of Prayer"

Only two days till Saturday and our big celebration of Saint Clare - bit by bit everything is starting to pull together. We just had choir practice a little bit ago with the organist and trumpet player. They are both so good! Was like listening to a little mini concert as they went through their stuff together.

Afterward went out the front door to say good-bye and there was our neighbor going down the street with the world's cutest puppy. Well of course I had to go talk to the world's cutest puppy. A teeny, tiny little baby poodle. Darling, darling, darling. Then I came back inside and the world's biggest puppy... Shelley our golden retriever who is 3 years old.. couldn't get enough of puppy smell on my hands and habit. Funny. Too bad we couldn't have them both at the Celebration of Clare - then it wouldn't matter if we sang well or not - or did anything well or not.. all eyes would be on the world's cutest puppy and the second runner up! Sigh.

Novena Prayer to Saint Clare

Faithful Saint Clare,
daughter of the Church,
friend and confidante of Popes,
intercede for holy Church.
Look graciously from heaven
on our holy father Pope Benedict.
Enlighten us to remove from our souls
all that hinders the progress
of the Church on earth.
Grant that we may share
your great love for the Church
of God and spread His kingdom
on earth by a holy life.
You who worked miracles
in the presence of the Popes
on earth, obtain for us the graces we need,
now that you stand in the presence
of the most high God in heaven.
Amen.

More things
are wrought by Prayer
than this world dreams of—

ALFRED LORD TENNYSON

A Friend Who Cares
Josephine Stella Namatovu
Cathays, Cardiff, Wales

God is with us and he cares! Emmanuel!

I have come to believe more than ever that God is very near us and shares our every moment. This revelation has helped me to trust and surrender all my cares to Him.

A few weeks ago, I found myself with a huge financial problem which required me to pledge paying a certain amount every month to clear the debt.

I had nowhere to turn for help. I hoped that I would be able to solve my problem as long as I continued to work at my present job and was given at least forty hours of work every week.

Prayer for Forgiveness

Psalm 79:9
Help us, O God our savior,
because of the glory of your name;
Deliver us and pardon our sins
for your name's sake.

Our God is a forgiving God. His boundless mercy and compassion reveals the infinite dimension of his forgiving, healing, redeeming love.

The manifestation of his love fills our heart with sorrow and gratitude and impels us to honor and glorify his holy name.

The Lord himself tells us how compelling is his love: "It is I, I, who wipe out, for my own sake, your offenses; your sins I remember no more." (Is 43:25)

On a personal note…

The Gift of Time

I went out, Lord.
People were coming and going,
Walking and running.

Everything was rushing:
Cars, trucks, the street, the whole town.
People were rushing not to waste time.
They were rushing after time,
To catch up with time.
To gain time.

From today's readings: "The days are coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah.... Create a clean heart in me, O God.... I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church.... ”

The New Covenant

Today’s first reading is so important, the whole passage occurs twice in the Bible! It was first written in the Old Testament Book of Jeremiah (beginning with chapter 31, verse 31), as we read today; later, in a reflection on Christ as the High Priest of the new covenant, all these verses were quoted in the New Testament letter to the Hebrews, starting with chapter 8, verse 8.

A covenant, you may recall, differs substantially from a contract, because a contract is merely a binding agreement for the exchange of goods or services, and it only remains in force until the completion of the terms. In contrast, a covenant consists of persons pledging their very selves as the basis for a new, permanent relationship - when a man and woman get married, for instance, they make a covenant: they unite their very persons to each other in a permanent bond. The permanency of a covenant is further reinforced in the original language: in Hebrew, “to make” a covenant is literally “to cut” a covenant, as in the act of engraving something permanently in stone.

So if a covenant is permanent, why was the old covenant superceded by the new covenant? The answer is found there in the letter to the Hebrews, which I’ll comment on another day, although of course you’re welcome to read it right now!
