Quote for the Day:
When I speak alone with God and with our Lady,
more than as a grown-up, I prefer to feel myself a child;
the mitre, the zuchetto, and the ring all disappear.
And I abandon myself to the spontaneous tenderness
that a a child has for his mamma and papa.

Pope John Paul I

Quote from the book, "101 Inspirational Stories of the Power of Prayer"

Happy Feast of Saint Clare today!

Our Saturday celebration was wonderful. The weather was cool and a bit breezy but no rain! The weather prediction was that we might get some.... so we prayed Mother Teresa's Emergency Novena after breakfast.. and all turned out fine!

After the beautiful Mass - there was time to stand around and chat with everyone - as we all waited in line for delicious snacks. Those we had made and our good friends baking gifts as well! Yum!

The pictures below - are compliments of Barb... just some fun photos she took mostly towards the end of the celebration. Our real photograher will get back to me with the full celebration of photos later this week.

Below is Sister Rita Louise chatting with two of the Missionaries of Charity. Lovely, lovely sisters.

Even Shelley got to make an appearance toward the end. She was the world's saddest, most neglected puppy during most of the celebration. Sister Colleen had her cloistered on the second floor... she was so. so sad to miss the first part of the party but properly spoiled at the end!

Novena Prayer to Saint Clare

Faithful Saint Clare,
daughter of the Church,
friend and confidante of Popes,
intercede for holy Church.
Look graciously from heaven
on our holy father Pope Benedict.
Enlighten us to remove from our souls
all that hinders the progress
of the Church on earth.
Grant that we may share
your great love for the Church
of God and spread His kingdom
on earth by a holy life.
You who worked miracles
in the presence of the Popes
on earth, obtain for us the graces we need,
now that you stand in the presence
of the most high God in heaven.
Amen.

More things

ALFRED LORD TENNYSON

One More Hug
Betsy J. Jackson
Toledo, Ohio

In 2003, my husband and I returned to Toledo, Ohio, after living in Gig Harbor, Washington, for three years. It was wonderful to be back with my mom, dad, daughter, sister, nieces, nephews, aunts, and uncles.

My 84-year-old dad, Tony, was still as independent as ever, and full of love for life. He still worked three days a week delivering nuclear medicine to area hospitals, and was still keeping his house maintained--cutting the grass, building decks, painting, and putting in new floors in his home.

However, he began to feel unusually tired, and his doctor recommended a heart catheterization.

On the day of the procedure, we were all laughing and telling stories about how wonderful life was when we were growing up, and how much we loved each other. None of us could imagine that anything might go wrong.

His Mercy Endures Forever

Psalm 136:1
Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good,
for his mercy endures forever.

The refrain "his mercy endures forever" occurs many times in the psalms—twenty-six times in this psalm alone. It reminds us of an oft-repeated response of a litany. Its repetition is necessary since we fall frequently in spite of our best resolves. We need to know that God's merciful forgiveness is always reaching out to us regardless of our many infedelities.

We cannot comprehend so great a compassionate love. All we can do is "give thanks to the Lord, for he is good."

How comforting are the words of Jesus: "I tell you, there will likewise be more joy in heaven over one repentent sinner than over ninety-nine righteous people who have no need to repent. " (Lk 15:7)

On a personal note…

The Song of Clare

A song! The song of troubadour
has touched my woman’s heart
within its depths, awakening
response of yearning eagerness.

Oh Francis, sing again your song.
Repeat the words you sang along
the pebbled paths you trod. I heard
an echo borne so sweet upon
a zephyred breeze, I thought my heart
to burst in raptured joy. Beneath
its measured pulse an angel song
in silence whispered praise
for God alone to hear. Repeat
the song addressed to her
for whom your life is melody
of faithfulness and ardent love.
Your song is mine and mine is yours.
The poor, the chaste, the simple Christ,
the goal of all our waking hours,
who trod the roads of Galilee
and died on hill of Calvary,
who rose from borrowed grave to fill
the world with Easter joy, is Lord
of every single breath I take,
of every beat of loving heart.

Oh Francis, sing again your song.
Before my Lord, I lay my heart
and soul. The jewels I wear are nought
beside the gems of Poverty.
The gowns that clothe my maiden form
are heavy burden, sadly borne.
My ancient name is honoured sign
of great and loyal ancestry,
but greater far is holy name
of gracious Lord I long to serve.

Oh Francis, sing again your song.
The mantle of the poor, the gems
of love for Crucified, the couch
of penance, prayerful vigils kept
beneath the star-bespangled skies-
your prayer is echo of my own.

I cast aside my earthly gold.
The simple life of troubadour
is mine, whate’er the cost. The song
you sing is also mine to raise
for all the waiting world to hear;
a song of love that cannot end,
the music of Eternity.

God bless,
Sr Janet

Daily Readings
Aug 11 Mon: Clare, v, rf M

From today's readings: “Like the bow which appears in the clouds on a rainy day was the splendor that surrounded Him. Such was the vision of the likeness of the glory of the LORD.... Praise the LORD from the heavens; praise Him in the heights; Praise Him, all you His angels; praise Him, all you His hosts.... The Son of Man is to be handed over to men, and they will kill Him, and He will be raised on the third day....”

Theophany

In a way, none of the Old Testament prophets was “typical” - they all have distinguishing traits, and delivered their messages from God in different manners. Yet still, Ezekiel stands out as particularly sui generis - the first thing that strikes most people about this seer who prophesied to the exiles in Babylon (the land of the Chaldeans) is his mysticism, and his detailed and complicated visions.

Take a deep breath, then read all of chapter one of Ezekiel, the magnificent theophany (vision of God). Like the Book of Revelation, Ezekiel’s visions attempt to describe heavenly realities in earthly terms, so it’s no wonder that they come across as fantastical, bizarre, and even beyond human imagination. That scares some people so much, they just stop reading!

But don’t let that happen to you as the lectionary samples Ezekiel’s writings over the next couple of weeks! Instead, just read and take in the visions and symbolic actions in the same way you would struggle with a vivid dream, full of significance but quite cryptic as to an exact meaning. At times, historical cultural background will provide clues to understanding. And sometimes, keys to interpretation can be found elsewhere in Scripture. Only occasionally will I even dare to offer my own best guess, but don’t expect me to explain everything and solve all the riddles - no one on earth can do that, because remember, transcendent heavenly realities are being portrayed in our necessarily inadequate earthly language: Such was the vision of the likeness of the glory of the LORD!
