Quote for the Day:
Praying without faith is like trying to cut with a blunt
knife—much labor expended to little purpose.

Quote from the book, "101 Inspirational Stories of the Power of Prayer"

Besides the above quote - here is my latest favorite by Karl Keating:

To repent is the change the direction you are looking for happiness.

For me that makes it so much more concrete and useable than my former image of repentance. The sackcloth and ashes mode. The sackcloth and ashes done in the right spirit would be a good thing - but I'm afraid in my mind... I just saw a dirty sack and ashes and never really looked beyond that very much. Sort of a doom and gloom approach to holiness.

But I can easily see my self zipping down a fast paced road - coming to a stop sign and saying, "Whoa, where is this road going to? Do I really want to stay on it?"

One of the ways that I find God speaks to me most powerfully is through dreams. Last night I was having a rather heart to heart talk to God and feeling rather bleak and discouraged about a certain matter. I was trying to be very honest and forthright... without any "Thee's" and Thou"s" but just simply stating where I was having some difficulties in my faith walk. I went to sleep without any feeling of anything. Just Blah de blah. Then I had a dream. When I woke up I wrote down parts of it so I would remember it. At first it didn't make any sense. Then I figured it meant one thing but later during Mass this morning - a whole other meaning spoke to me.

A sort of "Eureka" break through - BUT what was even more comforting to me than that - was the heart feeling that God was listening - was caring - and showing me a way through a bit of darkness.

Without rejection. Without condemnation. Just a simple - ordinary dream that helped me see something I needed to see.

I heartily reccommend taking any difficulty you are having..... and talk it out with God. Be really clear and state just what the situation is and how you feel about it. Give the whole thing to God. The answer may not come in a dream... or even very quickly. But I do believe you will "know "that God is listening to you - that in some way he will "Show" you a next step.

Blessings of Peace and All Good, Sister Patricia

ALFRED LORD TENNYSON

The Miracle Shop
Sister Patricia Proctor, OSC

A new shop has opened. It's called The Miracle Shop.

It's very nice. You go in and there is a kind and smiling clerk behind the counter. You ask for whatever miracle you want and the clerk looks through the catalog for you.

Lo and behold, the very miracle you want is available! Not only that--it is free with immediate delivery.

So you order it. I mean after all it doesn't get much better than that, does it?

So you go back the next day and order another miracle. Same thing. Pretty soon you just start expecting those miracles to always be there. On time, free, and with immediate delivery.

Not to Us

Psalm 11:5:1
Not to us, O Lord, not to us
but to your name give glory
because of your kindness, because of your truth.

How apt is this prayer! We are often beset by megalomania. We want everything to happen according to our wishes and plans. We feel so indispensable at times. We may be convinced that our opinions and our input is vitally important to the success of any project.

We may be momentarily oblivious of the fact that every thought and inspiration, every skill and facility, are gifts from God. How much we need to pray: "Not to us, O Lord, not to us."

The writer of Hebrews put it this way: "Every house is founded by someone, but God is the founder of all." (Heb 3:4)

On a personal note…

The Lord of the Harvest

Once upon a time, I knew nothing about farming, the result of being born in a city. Then, in my teens, I had the opportunity of a Saturday and holiday job on a friend’s farm. It was an eye-opener and ever since, the needs of the farming community have been very close to my heart.

Walking along the road this morning, seeing the fields ‘white for the harvest’ and knowing that the farmers desperately need a few days without rain if they are to bring in the harvest, it seems to be important, at this time of year, to pray for farmers everywhere, especially those who are facing adverse weather conditions of whatever sort.

May God bless the farmers, their essential work and their crops. May the Lord of the Harvest grant an abundance of all those crops that feed us. May there be enough and to spare.

May God also bless the work of those who depend on their gardens and allotments for food supplies.

…and may God bless each of us.

Daily Readings
Aug 25 Mon: Ordinary Weekday/ Louis of France, mm/ Joseph Calasanz, p, rf

From today's readings: “We always pray for you, that our God may make you worthy of His calling and powerfully bring to fulfillment every good purpose and every effort of faith.... Proclaim God’s marvelous deeds to all the nations.... Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites!”

A New Direction

After months of daily first readings taken from the prophets, it probably seems like a breath of fresh air as we return to the New Testament, this time with the second letter of Paul to the Thessalonians (at this time last year, the lectionary was highlighting the first letter to the Thessalonians).

As is often the case, Paul writes to give encouragement in time of tribulation, praising the Thessalonians because of “your endurance and faith in all your persecutions and the afflictions you endure.”

This short letter can easily be read in its entirety in just a few minutes - why not do that now?
