Quote for the Day:
When thou prayest, rather let thy heart be without words
than thy words without heart.
John Bunyan

Quote from the book, "101 Inspirational Stories of the Power of Prayer"

Tonight I'm definitely (God willing) going to go to bed before 10:00. Because I am long past turning into a pumkin I think its more like a squash.

I went to see my mom for a brief visit. She has a black eye, no doubt about that.. but its not as big and terrible as I thought it might be. She also seemed to be in good cheer though tired. She was just waking up from a nap when I arrived and after about ten minutes was ready to lie back down and take another one. That is good, sleep is very healing and after such a fall - the body needs a little extra.

Blessings of Peace and All Good,
Sister Patricia

ALFRED LORD TENNYSON

The Perfect Home
Norma W. Coffin
Melbourne, Florida

We had sold our home, and now, after living with my mom and stepdad for a month, we were finally going to settle on our new home. We had been praying for an affordable house near St. Matthew's Church and school in Baltimore for a long time and had finally found the perfect home. My husband Charles and I had three children and I was eight months pregnant with our fourth. We were eager to get on with our lives.

At the settlement table, we were crushed to learn that the seller had accepted cash from another buyer and the house was no longer ours. It was back to square one.

Again we prayed for a home near St. Matthew's Church and school. I talked to Mary and told her she knew how it felt to need a place to be when she was carrying her baby. "Help me, please!" I cried, and she did.

We found a corner row house just two blocks from the first one we were going to buy and were able to get immediate possession. Then I talked to Mary and God a lot about getting settled into our new home before the baby arrived. Have you ever seen Tevye, the milkman in Fiddler on the Roof talk to God in his heart-to-heart conversations? Well, that is me when I pray, and I had one of those heart-to-heart talks with God about the whole situation.

Only in the Lord

Psalm 107:5-6 and 9
Hungry and thirsty,
their life was wasting away within them.
They cried to the Lord in their distress;
from their straits he rescued them.
Because he satisfied the longing soul
and filled the hungry soul with good things.

When we are oblivious of the Lord's abiding presence, or worse, stray away from him, we get lost in the wilderness which brings little or no joy and satisfaction. We find no fulfillment in the mundane and materialistic allurements which wean us away from the Lord.

With the psalmist let us thank the Lord, for he alone can satisfy our longing heart and fill our hungry soul with good things.

St. Peter points the way: "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life." (Jn 6:68)

Daily Readings
Aug 28 Thu: Augustine, bp, dr M

From today's readings: “God is faithful, and by Him you were called to fellowship with His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.... Great is the LORD and highly to be praised; His greatness is unsearchable... So too, you also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come.”

Letters to Sin City

In New Testament times, Corinth was a city well-known for its licentiousness - throughout the Roman Empire, for instance, “Corinthian girl” was a slang term for “prostitute.” Few places would have been less likely to give the high moral demands of the Gospel a fair hearing.

And yet, when Paul arrived there around the year 50 (cf. Acts of the Apostles, chapter 18), he found fertile ground for the Faith, which inspired him to stay there for a year and a half. Later, around the year 57, he wrote two great letters to the Corinthians (and two additional letters which have been lost).

The two epistles to the Corinthians are perfect examples of typical Pauline letters: they begin with a warm greeting, address particular concerns which had come to Paul’s attention, contain profound passages of doctrinal exposition, shine with the intense emotions and rationality of Paul’s genius, and close with some practical requests and final exhortations.

For the next several weeks, the First Letter to the Corinthians will be featured as the first reading. All around, this is my favorite New Testament epistle. Try to read the whole text today or tomorrow, and I wouldn’t be surprised if you too find a number of familiar and favorite passages which perhaps you weren’t aware are to be found in this great letter. Even the greeting (read today) is an inspiration in itself!
