Angel Chariot
Carol G. Spoor
Assonet, Massachusett
It was two o'clock in the morning on October 8, 1984, when I was
awakened by my husband Archie telling me he couldn't feel his legs.
He had been suffering for over a week with terrible back pains, and we
had visited three different emergency rooms. Each one sent him home
with Valium and instructions to rest. They said he had just sprained his
back.
That morning he tried to get out of bed and to the bathroom and
landed face first on the floor. I immediately called 911. Our children
were all home, so I was unable to accompany him to the hospital. I felt
so helpless.
The next morning after the kids went to school I immediately drove
to the hospital. The doctors couldn't tell me what was wrong; they only
said that it didn't look good. He seemed to be paralyzed from the waist
down and many complications could arise. He was only forty-five years
old, but because he was a heavy man it was hard for them to pinpoint
what was causing the problem.
