Quote for the Day:
Picture If we truly love people, we will desire for them far more than it is within our power to give them, and this will lead us to prayer: Intercession is a way of loving others.

Mom and friend Barb in new home
Okay... so Mom has moved again. This time to a secure dementia unit - where she can wander all she wants and still be Okay. I feel very good about this move for three reasons.

1. It's to Good Sam (aka Good Samaritan) nursing center - they have top ratings for care. In fact when I was checking out places for my dad ten years ago and we had a friend who was in high management in DSHS - when we told him we were considering A Good Samaritan placement.. he said - "They are absolutely the best."

2. It's a religious (Lutheran) facility - which 99 times out of 100 in my opinion means that the bottom line is not money... its ministry. It's care - It's love. When push comes to shove I will take Jesus over profit any day of the week. Here is their motto, "In Christ's love, everyone is someone."

3. This is the place where my dad spent his last year of care over ten years ago. It was a wonderful, wonderful place for him then and so I feel very secure that it is still the same. In fact even the top staff is the same.

So this is where the situation is at present. I wonder if my mom holds the record for being moved? Probably not - but it sure seems like we must be in the top running for the honors. I am almost fearful of saying this will be a more permanent move - because of course that is what I thought the last three were.. but God willing.. it will be.

Stay tuned.. And thank you for your prayers and concern. I hope to go see her tomorrow and see how her first night went.

Picture"We know that God makes all things work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to His decree." (Romans 8:28)

Many years ago I realized how true this scripture is, but not before I experienced disappointment and shed quite a few tears. It was at an extremely difficult time in my life when I desperately needed a job with benefits.

Prior to this, the Lord had answered my prayers for employment and provided me with a part-time government job with no benefits. I was most grateful to Him for that opportunity, but I continued to look for full-time employment that offered housing, retirement, medical, and insurance benefits.

A position finally opened and I applied for it but was not selected. The fact that I was the second choice out of sixty-five applicants wasn't much consolation. My loss was the same as the person who had ranked sixty-fifth.

Sacrifice of Praise

Psalm 54:8
Freely will I offer you sacrifice;
I will praise your name, O Lord, for its goodness.

This psalm teaches us how to appeal humbly and confidently to God to protect and save us from any and all danger. Knowing God's faithfulness, we, like the psalmist, are certain that the Lord will always come to our rescue.

In return for his continual goodness to us, we promise God our praise and thanks as a very special gift. Pledging this gift to the Lord makes it a sacred sacrifice of praise.

The sacred writer urges us in these words: "Through him let us continually offer God a sacrifice of praise, that is, the fruit of the lips which acknowledge his name." (Heb 13:15)

From today's readings: “For through the Spirit, by faith, we await the hope of righteousness.... Let Your mercy come to me, O Lord.... Give alms, and behold, everything will be clean for you.”

Faith working through Love

St. Paul is certainly the greatest theologian to expound on the profound nature of faith in Christ Jesus. Now when we try to appreciate a certain artist’s use of color, we need to consider how he used color in ALL of his works - it would be a hasty conclusion to suppose that we could draw valid conclusions about his use of color from just one painting, or just one part of a certain work.

Similarly, to grasp St. Paul’s teaching on faith, we need to reflect on his teachings on faith in all his letters. Many hasty and superficial conclusions about faith have been based on just one or two verses in Paul’s letters. Such errors can be avoided only by carefully considering, not just all of Paul’s writings, but rather, the full deposit of faith!

So today’s reading concludes, “For in Christ Jesus, neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything, but only faith working through love.” This is an essential insight about faith, but even so, not yet the full insight. There’s much more to faith than can be summed up in a short virtual retreat reflection!
